Designing for a foundation offering international student exchange is a task that requires an extra dose of empathy. At first glance, it is a simple task since the recipients are a strictly defined age group. However, these are young people from different parts of the world with entirely different cultural backgrounds and diverse experiences. Therefore, with each design decision, it was necessary to think twice about whether the message would be understandable and clear for everyone and whether we do not use mental shortcuts that are familiar only to a specific part of the world.
This project raised some interesting topics, which from the perspective of international user experience, do not give a clear answer.
For example, when designing application forms, should we put the day first, then the month, and finally the year in the date field like the Europeans do, or swap the month with the day field around as they do in America? Or start with the year and then all the rest? In what time zones should we present foundation employees' hours of availability?
Student exchange is an adventure that will be remembered for a lifetime, during which teenagers meet exceptional people and sometimes make long-term friendships.
However, it should also be remembered during the design process that arriving thousands of kilometers from parents, home, and friends also means stress, a sense of uncertainty, and cultural misunderstanding. Therefore, building a sense of inclusivity and representation of all cultural and ethnic groups is extremely important to create a sense of security and understanding.
